38-year-old Wen Wen* entered sex work when she was only 16 years old due to financial strains. At the age of 36, she finally left the industry upon the behest of a good friend of hers. In total, Wen Wen spent 20 years in the sex industry for survival. However, during her time in industry, she was struggling to get by and her relationship with her family became strained over the years. She now lives in a one-room rental flat with a co-tenant.Â
Wen Wen has tried various odd jobs but has been unable to sustain them as she struggles with her mental health. Her younger sister passed away from suicide in 2012, and the loss was so excruciatingly painful for Wen Wen that it plunged her into depression and a vicious cycle of substance abuse for the next few years. Her younger sister was a beacon of strength for her throughout most of her life. In 2018, she was arrested for drug consumption and she served her time in the Drug Rehabilitation Centre. After her release, she did not go back into the sex industry, vowing to change her life for the better.Â
Wen Wen has been certified temporarily unfit for work for the duration of 1 year starting in October 2020. She is receiving financial support from her Social Service Office. However, the amount is not sufficient as it barely covers her monthly expenditures. Despite all the struggles she has gone through, Wen Wen hopes to upskill herself and to one day have a roof over her head that she can call her own.Â
Ray of Hope is targeting to raise $1,650.00 for Wen Wen.
