Tushar, 33 years old, is the youngest among four siblings. He is also the family’s sole breadwinner who was supporting his widowed mother when he was working as a General Worker in a shipyard. To work in Singapore, Tushar paid a hefty sum of S$8,000 in agent’s fees in 2012. He has been working steadfastly for the past 9 years until he met with an accident at his workplace.

The Accident

On  24th December 2020, Tushar fell more than 1 metre while retrieving work materials, injuring his back and right ankle. He was brought to the hospital and was issued approximately 74 days of medical leave. Although he has done his MRI and X-Ray, surgery does not seem to be an option for him, as it is expected to cost around S$36,000.  Till today, Tushar still experiences pain in his back and right leg, and is unable to carry heavy load.

Tushar was earning between $600-$700 per month, and had remitted the bulk of his salary home to his family. As he has stopped working since his injury, he is also no longer able to repay his outstanding loan that amounts to S$1,600. The 33-year-old is also worried about his mother who suffers from heart issues. Tushar’s elder brother works in another city in Bangladesh and does not earn enough to support his wife and child. His two elder sisters are housewives and only rely on their husbands’ incomes which have been unstable during this difficult time of the pandemic.
