Growing in a dysfunctional family, Peter learnt to be independent from a young age. For as long as he could remember, his mother, his only kin, was battling with multiple challenges.

Times were tough with no family support and with no stable income as he tried to make ends meet. At 8, Peter spent nine years staying in two homes, one after another, after his mother was incarcerated. Speaking to the caseworkers, Peter recalls how surviving was a huge struggle for him as a teen. He had to take it upon himself to keep himself in school and took on any jobs whenever possible to meet his basic needs – food, new clothes, new shoes.

In 2001, Peter’s parents were divorced, leaving him with no recollection or memories of his biological father. Unfortunately, Peter’s mum passed away in 2016 following a heart attack, only leaving him with their current rental flat which helped Peter throughout the years.

Peter, now 23, is serving his National Service and earns $630/month. When the caseworkers met him, he also shared about he takes interest in electric works and aspires to be a certified electrician in the near future. He hopes to start saving now, in preparation of his aspirations and future employment.
