Rakibul, 24, is a Bangladeshi migrant worker. He is the eldest son to his five younger siblings and was the sole provider to his family. In hopes of providing a better life for his family, Rakibul came to Singapore in 2020 to work as a shipyard worker. However, his hopes were crushed when he met with a workplace related accident in November 2021. While grinding concrete blocks at work, fragments of it entered his eye resulting in an eye injury.

Ray of Hope is raising $1,800 ($450 x 4 months) to support Rakibul and his family. This will help Rakibul with his living expenses in Singapore and allow him to send remittance home to his family.

On 10 November 2021, Rakibul was tasked to grind concrete blocks when the fragments of concrete entered his eyes, leaving a cut on his right eyeball. The accident affected his eyesight and he was in persistent pain. The doctor subsequently told him that he was temporarily unfit for employment and gave him eye drops and 98 days of MC. Since the accident, Rakibul has not been able to return to work. 

Rakibul was earning an average monthly salary of $600 prior to the accident and would remit most of that sum to his family. He worked hard to support his family in Bangladesh, often working 7 days a week with regular overtime. Rakibul’s father now takes up ad-hoc jobs to help sustain income for the family. In the meantime, Rakibul is in great distress as he has not been able to send money to his family. His younger siblings are still attending school.
