Update (10/02/2021)

Ray of Hope was updated by Rahaman’s case worker that Rahaman may need a longer time frame to recuperate. Hence, Ray of Hope will be increasing the amount to be raised to S$9,600 ($800 x 12 months) to support Rahaman’s family while he is in the road to recovery. In addition, Rahaman has received $3,000 from another NGO to help his family during this tough period.

Rahaman Luftor is from Bangladesh and is married with three school-going children. In order to work in Singapore, Rahman had borrowed approximately S$5,100 from his relatives to pay for the agent’s fee to work as a construction worker so that he could support his family. Every month, Rahaman remits the bulk of his $900 salary to his family for their daily needs and his children’s education.

On the 4th of July 2020, Rahaman suffered a massive stroke involving the whole left side of his brain because of a severe and unexpected thickening of the blood due to an asymptomatic Covid-19 infection. After the stroke, his brain swelled, and he had to go through a surgery which involves opening the left side of the skull to allow the brain to swell outwards. Despite a successful surgery, the stroke had left Rahaman paralysed and unable to speak. His doctors have stated that he would never be able to be employed again.

Rahaman is now back home in Bangladesh under the care of his wife and eldest daughter, his full-time caregivers. Rahaman’s eldest daughter shared that the family is under immense pressure as they struggle to make ends meet. Rahaman still owes his relatives about S$5,100 even after working for almost 8 years since 2012.

With his family relying on him for sustenance, Rahaman is in great distress without a source of income. Ray of Hope would like to raise S$4,000 to support Rahman and his family for the next 5 months (S$800 x 5 months) as he works towards recovery.
