41-year-old Nazrul has been in Singapore since 2006 as a General Construction Worker. He has a wife and three young children. Nazrul used to earn around $1,000 which included overtime pay. Nazrul works almost everyday to ensure that he is able to remit the bulk of his salary for his family. However, Nazrul’s life changed when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in May 2022.
Ray of Hope would like to raise $13,166.90 to support Nazrul with his chemotherapy and medication in Bangladesh. With his family relying on him for sustenance, Nazrul is in great distress without a source of income.
Nazrul is from Bangladesh and is married with three children between the age of 4 and 11. He is the sole provider to the family as his wife is the main caregiver to their children. He would often pick up overtime shifts to earn at least $1,000 and would remit the bulk of his salary to support his family’s living expenses.
In May 2022, Nazrul was brought to the hospital as he was frequently coughing out blood. When he visited the hospital, his medical report revealed that he has Stage 4 Lung Cancer and the cancer cells have spread to his bones. He was subsequently hospitalised and since then, Nazrul has not been working.
Nazrul’s employer has kindly paid for his medical treatment in Singapore thus far. Treatment for such illness is very costly in Singapore. Hence, Nazrul has returned to Bangladesh to further his treatment. However, being the sole breadwinner of the family, Nazrul and his family are unable to afford the treatment in Bangladesh as well. After consulting the doctors in the hospital, chemotherapy treatment will usually last 5 months. The estimated cost of treatment in Bangladesh would be 880,000 Bangladeshi Taka (roughly SGD13,166.90).
Nazrul shared with our case worker that he is worried about how he would provide for his family while he receives treatment. He is under immense pressure as the family struggles to pay for his treatment fees and to make ends meet.
