At the age of 9, Mr Tan’s mother left him under the care of her close friend. Unfortunately, a fall from a rambutan tree caused him to injure his neck and he started to lose sensation and functionality in his lower limbs. 

As the family was unable to provide him with adequate care, he was transferred to the residential home and has lived there since 1976. Over the years, his mobility started deteriorating, leaving him dependent on a wheelchair and on others for his activities of daily living.

Ray of Hope is raising $2,400 ($200 x 12 months) to provide Mr Tan with an allowance for his daily necessities.

Mr Tan is a 65-year-old elderly who has been living in a residential home since 1976. Due to a fall from a rambutan tree, he injured his neck and spine. He felt numb after the fall and he started to lose sensation and functionality in his lower limbs. Subsequently his mobility started deteriorating, leaving him dependent on a wheelchair and on others for his activities of daily living. Mr Tan now attends physiotherapy twice a week and follows up closely with his hospital check-ups.

At the age of 9, his mother left him under the care of her close friend. Shortly after, he was transferred to the residential home as the family was unable to provide him with adequate care. While other seniors are entitled to Silver support schemes and receive payouts occasionally, Mr Tan did not receive payouts of any kind due to his lack of citizenship. On top of financial difficulties, he is faced with crippling loneliness as he does not have much family support.

Even without family support, Mr Tan takes good care of the residents in the home and shares what little he has with them, because he knows how it feels to be isolated.
