Ray of Hope is raising $3,600 ($300 x 12 months) to defray Mr Suhaimy’s food and transport expenses.
Mr Suhaimy, 58, recently moved into his new, 1-room HDB rental flat. He worked in the construction sector and was a mooring crew for two years, until 2021. He is divorced with no children.
In April 2021, Mr Suhaimy was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure and requires dialysis thrice a week. He also suffers from diabetes and asthma. He was certified permanently unfit for work and has relied on social assistance ever since.
Mr Suhaimy worries about not having an income, especially when the assistance he receives cannot cover his daily expenses. In addition to going for dialysis sessions thrice weekly, he also has medical appointments at the hospital at least 4 times a month. The dialysis sessions are fully subsidised, but Mr Suhaimy must still pay $120 for taxi rides and spends approximately $20 per day for 3 meals. The taxi rides for his dialysis sessions are covered by the transport assistance card that he has applied for.
Mr Suhaimy is the eldest of 5 siblings, but is not in contact with most of them, except his youngest sister who checks in on him at least once a week.
*Mr Suhaimy is receiving social assistance, and it ends in July 2022.
