Ray of Hope is raising $26,773.00 to help Mr Gan and his wife with essential renovation costs for their flat. This renovation project is being coordinated by NFL (Neighbours for Life).
Mr Gan was paralysed from his waist down more than 50 years ago as a result of an operation on his spine. He requires a wheelchair to move around and uses a urinary catheter. Mr Gan currently lives in a HDB flat with his wife of 41 years, Ah Huay. They do not have children and strive to be as independent as they can even with their disabilities and in their old age.
As Mr Gan uses a wheelchair and Ah Huay is of short stature as a result of polio, they require a home that is fitted with accessible features and designed to suit their needs. However, the condition of the elderly couple’s 27-year-old HDB flat, though cosy, is deteriorating and requires urgent renovation. The kitchen countertops have started falling apart, requiring them to be held together with masking tape. Posing an additional safety hazard to the elderly couple is the height of the countertops, which requires Ah Huay to stand on a stool to access the stove, basin and cabinets.
Although they strive to be as independent as they can, the elderly couple are turning to crowdfunding as Ah Huay was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2021, and had to stop working that year following an accident with a moving van. Other than daily expenses, a large amount is also spent monthly on their medical expenses and equipment. As such, Mr Gan and Ah Huay are in great need of funds to create a better living environment for themselves.
The amount of $26,773 will cover renovation works for the following:
- Installing kitchen counters, cabinets and wardrobes that are accessible for the couple
- Making the toilet and bathroom wheelchair accessible
- Masonry Work for the bathroom
- Plumbing Works
- Minor changes to the living and laundry area layout
- Flooring Works
- Painting Works
- Minor miscellaneous Works
*Mr Gan is not receiving social assistance.
