Mdm Subtra, 40, lives with her 14 year-old daughter and 6 year-old son in a 2-room rental flat. The single mother has been holding three part-time jobs to support her children. She was juggling three jobs: as an Assistant Special Education teacher, cashier and food packer, to make ends meet.
Mdm Subtra relied heavily on her helper of 6.5 years to care for her children while she was at work. Unfortunately, Mdm Subtra’s helper left for home recently. Although she is now in the midst of training a new helper, it has been challenging as both her children suffer from medical conditions.
Mdm Subtra’s teenage daughter was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and attends a special needs school. She was also having blood issues and low platelet counts since two years ago. Mdm Subtra’s son suffers from intestinal and heart issues, and is on regular follow-up at the hospital.
Daily life has been an emotionally stressful for Mdm Subtra, especially so as a single parent. Since her divorce in 2013, Mdm Subtra has not received any maintenance and struggled to put food on the table for her family.
Despite the trying times, Mdm Subtra completed a double Diploma in Social Welfare and Counselling, in hopes of seeking better employment opportunities. She was earning a gross income of approximately $2,300 until she had to quit her jobs recently in order to sort out her caregiving arrangements.
*Mdm Subtra is not receiving social assistance.
