35-year-old Mdm Hayati lives together with her husband and four children (17, 16, 6 & 5) in a one-room rental flat. She has a 10-year-old daughter who stays with and is being supported by her mother. Mdm Hayati’s husband works as a part-time security officer to support his family. With six mouths to feed in the household, his monthly income of $2,000 is insufficient to meet the needs of the family. The children are supported via the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) and the family is also receiving very minimal assistance from the Social Service Office (SSO) for their rent and town council payments.

Mdm Hayati’s three older children are from her first marriage, but she only receives a monthly maintenance of $150/child for two of them. Over the years, Mdm Hayati’s husband has been the one bringing home the bacon, while Mdm Hayati manages the children single-handedly while her husband is on night shift on most days. This includes sending their 6-year-old son for his speech therapy sessions thrice a week. Over time, the couple has incurred some debts as a result of having only one source of income.

Recently, the case workers were informed that Mdm Hayati has found employment as an office cleaner and is due to commence work soon. With an additional income of $500-$600 each month, we hope that the family’s financial situation will improve as they work towards clearing their arrears!
