“I know I have to take care of myself but it has been difficult. My priority has always been my mother.”

Many caregivers are often unprepared to take on the responsibilities as they are usually required to assume the role overnight. For 53-year-old Jean, she thought she could strike a balance between caring for her 86-year-old mother and working in the F&B sector. However, the toll that caregiving had on her after her mother’s fall three years ago led her to be a full-time caregiver to her mother. Her mother suffers from osteoporosis and is dependent on Jean for frequent assistance. 

Ray of Hope would like to raise $3,870 ($645 x 6 months) to help Jean with the family’s living expenses. We hope that alleviating her financial burdens will bring some respite for Jean and encourage her to persevere in this journey.

Jean is the sole caregiver to her wheelchair bound mother after a hip surgery due to a sudden fall three years ago. Prior to the fall, Jean was working in the F&B sector earning approximately $2,000 monthly. Unfortunately, Jean had to quit her job to care for her mother’s everyday needs. Her mother suffers from osteoporosis and is dependent on Jean for frequent assistance such as toileting and showering among many others. Her mobility became limited and she eventually had to rely on a wheelchair. Since then, Jean has been through a lot of emotional and mental stress.

Caregiving for your loved ones can be a rewarding journey, but dealing with the demands can be difficult. Despite the challenging and demanding nature of her caregiving journey, Jean would always want to provide the best for her mother. Over the years, the resilient caregiver regards being her mother’s primary caregiver as a duty she has to fulfil as her daughter. Her mother had lovingly raised Jean since birth and she wishes to do more for her mother.

As an elderly person-in-need, Jean’s mother receives a quarterly payout from the Silver Support Scheme and monthly financial assistance from the Agency for Integrated Care. To supplement the family’s household income, Jean hopes to find a tenant to rent out one of their rooms.
