The Struggle

With his family of 9 relying on his sole income, it is no wonder that Mr Chua often finds himself worrying over the household bills. The struggle comes about when the family of 9 relies on the sole income of the 35-year-old. When the case workers visited Mr Chua at home, Mr Chua who works as a manufacturing technician told us that he is usually home when his children are fast asleep. After clocking maximum overtime and even with a salary of $2,400 a month, the family struggles to get by each month end. With 6 school-going children, Mr Chua told us that there is so much more to prepare for financially, especially when their 3-room BTO flat is likely to be ready at the end of the year. Every day when Mr Chua is at work, his wife manages the household single-handedly – from sending the children to school to preparing them for bed at the end of the day. The family is currently residing in a 4-room flat owned by Mr Chua’s elderly mum and they hope to own a place to call home one day.

After all, Mr Chua and his wife, like all parents, hope to provide their children with a more conducive environment to stay in, especially when his children are growing up fast day by day. Mr Chua’s wife, who will be applying for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP), hopes to be able to seek employment as she is currently unable to do so now that she is on Social Visit Pass.
