Background
Mr Shor* 33 years old, has had a very difficult and unfortunate life as a construction worker in Singapore. Ray of Hope’s case managers recently met Mr Shor and this is our second time assisting him. Mr Shor left rural Bangladesh in 2015 to work as a construction worker in Singapore. He was his family’s sole breadwinner and they depended on him to alleviate their crippling poverty. 5 days into his job, he suffered a work-related accident and returned back to Bangladesh in December 2017.
The Accident
Once Mr Shor has fully healed from his injuries, he returned back to Singapore in August 2018 and joined another construction company. Like his first time in Singapore, he suffered another workplace related accident on the 9th of March 2019. Mr Shor was on the rooftop carrying a 45kg waterproofing membrane when he tripped on an aircon pipe and the membrane fell on him. Due to the 45kg impact of the membrane, Mr Shor suffered injuries on his head, neck and upper left side of his body.
Despite the chronic pains that he suffered, his employer refused to send him to the hospital. Instead he was given some Panadol and sent back to his dorm. For 3 days Mr Shor suffered from persistent chronic pain and on the 4th day when the pain was too excruciating, he was sent to a clinic instead of a hospital. The medications he received from the clinic did not help and he was finally sent to the hospital close to 2 weeks after his accident.
He was given a total of 19 days MC and till today Mr Shor has not received his MC Wages. His sufferings and misfortunes did not stop at his injuries. Mr Shor informed us that after reporting his injuries and unpaid MC Wages to MOM, he was bullied at his dorm and his employers stopped providing for his meals.
Give Hope – Help Needed
Ray of Hope would like to raise S$1,000 (S$250 x 4 months) to defray his living expenses in Singapore and his family’s living expenses in Bangladesh while he awaits his compensation from MOM.
* This is Mr Shor’s second fundraiser. He received some compensation from his first injury but is disputing the claim.
