To be happy, healthy and safe. The wish of all parents; for their children to be happy, health and safe. Something so simple, and yet so difficult to achieve for some families amongst us. The parents of persons with intellectual disability (PWID) contend with a complex mix of emotions from the day their special child is born. Shock, denial, grief, heartache, uncertainty. But also joy, pride and a heart full of love for their very precious child. All these emotional roller coasters, with its accompanying ups and downs persist throughout their lives. And intensify as these parents and lifelong caregivers age and face their biggest fear of all; what life would hold for their child once they are no longer around.
Happee Hearts Movement currently supports 80 of these families (171 PWIDs and caregivers) in their complex healthcare needs and brings together health and social resources in a holistic manner to improve and maintain their well-being. Our commitment to these ageing caregivers is to continue being their adult child’s primary healthcare provider even when they are no longer around. We strive to uphold their wishes and their hopes for their adult child, and journey with him/her through the rest of their lives.
We endeavour to raise $128,000 for these 80 families (roughly $1,600 per family for 1 year) through this campaign which will go a long way in providing:
- Medical care
- Nursing care
- Allied health care (including physical therapy, podiatry and dietary recommendations)
- Caregiver support (including training, psycho-education and psycho-emotional support)
Please support us and make a difference!
About Happee Hearts Movement
Happee Hearts Movement was established to advocate for and to cater to the healthcare needs of adults with intellectual disability and their families in Singapore. It is a non-profit organisation founded by Dr Chen Shiling, and inspired by the many amazing persons with intellectual disability she has met over the years. Dr Chen strives to raise awareness about the healthcare needs of persons with intellectual disability and their families, and actively seeks out solutions in improving their lives. To this end, she works closely with governmental and non-governmental partners in providing accessible and holistic healthcare for this very vulnerable population.
