35-year-old Gobinda came to Singapore in December 2011 with hopes of providing a better quality of life for his family in Bangladesh. His family consists of his elderly mother, younger brother, his wife and 3-year-old daughter. As a worker in Singapore, he would earn an estimated salary of $1,000 which includes his overtime pay. He has contributed to Singapore in drain maintenance, plumbing and data cable servicing over the past years. Gobinda works almost everyday to ensure that he is able to remit the bulk of his salary for his family. However, Gobinda’s life changed when he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in early June 2021.

Treatment for such illness is very costly in Singapore. Gobinda’s employer has kindly paid for his medical treatment in Singapore thus far. It was reported that his medical fees was about $50,000 after his medical insurance for in-patient treatment was fully claimed. Hence, Gobinda intends to proceed to India soon to further his treatment. However, being the sole breadwinner of the family, Gobinda and his family is unable to afford the treatment in India as well. After consulting the doctors in the hospital, chemotherapy treatment will usually lasts 3 months or more. The estimated cost of treatment in India would be 12 lakhs rupees (roughly SGD21,800).

Gobinda shared with our case worker that he is worried about how he would provide for his family while he receives treatment. He is under immense pressure as the family struggles to pay for his treatment fees and to make ends meet.

With his family relying on him for sustenance, Gobinda is in great distress without a source of income. Ray of Hope would like to raise $21,800 to support his medical treatment in India.
