A single unwed mum struggles to provide for her 3-year-old daughter
“I remind myself not to rely on assistance because once I am used to it, my child would suffer if it stops one day.” was what Geraldine told the case workers when we met her. Geraldine is a single mum to her 3-year-old daughter. The 34 year old was working as in the retail line until she stopped her full-time work in 2018 to care for her daughter. Geraldine’s daughter suffers from digestive issues and has low immunity.
Financial hardship
The single mum told us how the $750 that she receives from SSO runs out fast, as she spends more than half of it on her daughter’s milk and diaper expenses. The balance goes to buying the necessities for home as she is currently staying her elderly father and younger sister. Geraldine’s father, who receives $250 from SSO each month, but uses the money to pay off the household bills, leaving him with less than $100 for himself each month.
Geraldine has been actively seeking employment as she does not want to rely on social assistance to make ends meet. With her assistance ending in March, Geraldine is worried about making ends meet while she renews her assistance until she secures employment.
Your donations will give hope to the resilient single mum!
Ray of Hope is raising $1,600 ($400 x 4 months) to help Geraldine with her groceries and children’s milk and diapers expenses while she works on securing a full-time employment.
*Geraldine is currently receiving public assistance which ends in March 2020.
