Dong Hui moved to Singapore in 2016 after paying S$10,000 in agent fees to work as a contract cleaner. To support his family back home, he worked from six in the morning till midnight every day to earn overtime hours. He earns S$1,800 per month and remits S$1,500 of his family income while remaining for his rent and living expenses. Dong Hui, who was divorced many years back, is the sole breadwinner supporting his family consisting of his 2 sons, aged 9 and 6, his parents, an 88-year-old grandmother, and older brother. Dong Hui’s dad suffers from Hepatitis C, and Dong Hui’s mum is the family’s main caregiver.
After working in Singapore for four years, Dong Hui was supposed to head home in August 2020. He had scheduled a flight and was excited to be reunited with his family again. However, on 13 August 2020, Dong Hui got into a road accident while returning home after work, leaving him unconscious after the accident. His doctor informed Dong Hui that he would be permanently disabled as a result of the accident. Currently, he is hospitalized and is still bedridden with a spinal injury. He also suffers from incontinence and poor control of bowels.
The hospital will be discharging Dong Hui because he was certified to be medically stable and fit to fly. However, Dong Hui has yet to settle his medical bills fully. His employer has offered to help with his S$70,000 medical bills earlier but has not done so. According to the hospital’s spokesperson, the necessary parties have been alerted to assist Dong Hui with his hospital bills.
With no source of income, while he recovers, Dong Hui is in distress. His family in his home country are relying on him for sustenance and other living expenses.
Ray of Hope would like to raise S$6,000 (S$1,500 x 4 months) to send remittances home to his family as he picks himself after the accident. We wish Dong Hui a speedy recovery so that he can return home to his family soon!
