The Covid-19 Migrant Support Coalition is happy to launch this campaign, together with the support of In This Together and Open Space Ventures, to raise awareness about the importance of health and nutrition among our migrant worker friends. In particular, this initiative began as our volunteers observed that migrant workers have been often having meals with large amounts of rice and hardly any meat or vegetables, let alone fruits. We hope to alleviate these tough times therefore with a piece of fruit, encourage workers to be more conscious of any food options they select, and to gently nudge and encourage all stakeholders to help provide more healthy options of food (including vegetables and fruits) to our migrant friends where they can.
What is WeFruits about:
Migrant workers are an integral part of our community, and play an important role in contributing to Singapore. They have been through an extremely difficult period of time during this pandemic, as they have not been able to come out of their dormitories to the community since the start of the circuit breaker, apart from going to work and to recreation centres.
This has affected their mental health and well-being, as well as choice of food options. At such a time, keeping up their health with proper food and nutrition becomes even more important. However, many migrant workers still do not get adequate amounts of vegetables or fruits.
Kicking off with a distribution this National Day 2021, we hope to distribute fruits (accompanied by a fruits nutrition tips postcard and learning session) to our migrant workers to remind them of the importance of such health and nutrition, as well as to nudge their employers, food suppliers and the general public towards supporting better food and nutrition standards for our workers for the long term.
Intended outcome:
For the migrant workers that we can distribute to:
- To receive a fruit each kicking off on National Day, 9 Aug 2021, accompanied by a fruits nutrition tips postcard and a learning session
- Raising awareness of the importance of the need for greater consumption of fruits and vegetables by migrant workers.
- To encourage our migrant workers that Singaporeans care for them, especially during this time.
For the dorm operators and employers, food suppliers and well-wishing general public:
- To encourage our employers, dorm operators, food suppliers and any well-wishing general public towards helping to ensure better standards of food and nutrition for our migrant workers, by providing greater amounts of fruits and vegetables for the workers.
- To link up our employers and dorm operators with food suppliers (including fruit vendors) who can deliver more fruits and vegetables to such dorms on a longer term basis.
- To nudge the food suppliers and food stall holders who cater to such workers to increase the health and nutrition of their food offerings to these migrant workers.
Who we are:
Covid-19 Migrant Support Coalition:
Established on 6 April 2020, the COVID-19 Migrant Support Coalition (CMSC) is a fully volunteer-run group-up initiative that started as a collaborative effort between a few smaller migrant workers supporting groups, together with other like-minded volunteers, to meet the needs of our migrant friends affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we also actively engage their dorm operators and employers, the relevant Ministries as well as the wider public, so that the issues can be dealt with through a multi-sector perspective. The effort is a highly collective one, and we believe that everyone has a part to play.
In This Together:
In This Together is a volunteer-run initiative, set up in October 2020. Our aim is to engage and connect the local community with the migrant worker community. Through this, we hope to raise awareness of the basic issues our migrant friends face working and living in Singapore. Through the kindness of our donors and sponsors we have been able to distribute care packs, food items and fans. We hope to continue this work through your generosity. A friend in need is a friend indeed – we are all In This Together!
Openspace Ventures:
Openspace Ventures makes investments in early-stage technology companies based in Southeast Asia. Openspace Ventures is supporting the COVID Migrant Support Coalition (CMSC), which runs activities supporting workers’ physical and mental health through direct engagements with workers as well as via employer education encompassing financial literacy, nutrition and building support networks.
