The Struggle

It was Mian’s fourth trip to Singapore since 2013. Despite being repatriated after working for barely a year with each company, the 31-year-old would only blame it on himself that he was not good enough for the job. Even with the huge amounts of agent fees he needs to pay in order to work in Singapore, the 31-year-old has never complained about the heavy responsibility that he needs to shoulder being the eldest sibling to his two younger sisters. All he wished for was the ability to earn a good income here so that he could send remittances home to support his parents and siblings.

Unfortunately, Mian met with a freak accident at his workplace in May this year. His left foot was left fractured and he had to undergo a surgery where a metallic support was implanted to prevent the injury from worsening. Overnight, his income came to an abrupt end when he could not continue working anymore.

Help Needed – Give Hope

Mian was promised of work here and had to pay an agent’s fee of S$5,200 before he could fly to Singapore to work. When he arrived here, Mian worked only three short months before meeting with this major setback. He was only given 15 days of work each month for the four months that he worked before his accident with a salary of $18 per day. After his accident, Mian does not have any income to settle his debt and also does not have any money to send to his family.

His 59 year old father has diabetes, heart, liver and back problems. His father’s medical bills are mounting. His mother suffers from fainting spells that stem from pains in the head. She has taken many different medicines but they had been no help. He has two sisters, one of whom is married. She has three children and is therefore unable to help support their parents. The other sister is still studying. Mian is basically the family’s sole breadwinner.

Although Mian’s medical bills were paid for by his employer, he is no longer able to stand or walk for a prolonged period of time, making it difficult for him to return to work in a construction site – probably where his only skills were trained at. With everyone in the family is counting on him, Mian is worried about the finances at home, especially when he is debt-laden without the possibility to return to work anytime soon.

Ray of Hope case workers have cited medical documents provided by Mian. However, they will not be published as he is currently seeking recourse with MOM.
