Anna is the sole provider to her family of five. Prior to the influx of Covid-19, Anna was working as a flyer distributor earning $1,280 every month. She was working for more than a year before her employment was terminated as she was not allowed to work during the Circuit Breaker period. Anna is now self-employed and is working on her online business selling perfumes. This allowed her to care for her children full-time while working. However, Anna shared that business has not been doing well and returns have been very marginal.
Anna has tried to apply for other employment before but due to her low qualifications and caregiving duties, it was difficult to secure other employment. The frequent closure of her daughter’s pre-school due to covid also made it difficult to work full-time while caring for her daughter.
Anna’s children are aged 16, 13, 10 and 5 respectively. Her eldest daughter lives in a residential shelter while her three younger children live with Anna in their two-room rental flat. Anna shared with our case workers that there were days when she was not able to provide her children with sufficient pocket money for school. Her mental health was greatly affected by the financial constraints the family was facing. Anna also confided that she was worried about her eldest daughter’s well-being after being transferred to the shelter. With the multiple stressors she was experiencing, the single mother was subsequently diagnosed with major depression.
*Anna SSO assistance ended in December 2021 and is pending renewal.
