Aidah is a mother of four children. Her cheerful disposition hides a malignant condition that slowly weakens her by the day. The 38-year-old was diagnosed with colon cancer, the same disease that plagued both her elderly mum and brother. In 2016, a diagnosis revealed that Aidah had Stage 2 Colon Cancer. Regardless of her deteriorating health, the resilient mother was working as a customer service officer. But the stress of work proved to be too overbearing to her already ailing health. Recent tests and checks have also shown that Aidah is at risk of contracting cervical cancer. Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 situation has put her follow-up appointments on hold.
Aidah’s husband, who works in an oil and gas company, is now the sole breadwinner of the family, bringing home around $2,100 inclusive of overtime hours. Losing her income is just one of Aidah’s worries as she had initially hoped to continue working for as long as she could. “I want to be able to stand on my own two feet to support my children. But I am getting weaker by the day, making it tiring for me to continue working.” Aidah told the caseworkers. She told us how depressed she often feels when she gets rejected for employment due to her medical conditions. What is more worrying is that her two daughters (16 & 14) from her previous marriage were both tested positive for Familial Adenomatous Polyposis; a condition which will ultimately lead to colon cancer. Aidah also has two sons (18 & 13) who are in the care of her ex-husband. However, he does not pay regular maintenance for their daughters.
Aidah is currently awaiting for her next review before the doctors decide what would be the next course of treatment for her cancer.
