The Struggle

Being a mum is no easy task, but imagine doing it all alone without the support of your spouse. From cleaning the house and helping the kids with homework to paying bills, single moms do it all. This is what makes single mums some kind of superheroes.

Shirley, 41 years old, was recently widowed after her husband passed away due to a malignant neoplasm two months back. Since then, she is raising their two 6-year-old boys single-handedly, and works in a Food & Beverage outlet to support her family. Shirley admits that with her salary of $800, things have been financially straining for her, leaving her with barely sufficient savings to prepare for her children’s registration into primary school next year. Shirley currently works part-time due to her caregiving duties, but hopes to work more hours after her children are settled into primary school. While both of Shirley’s sons are currently in childcare when she is at work, one of them has also been diagnosed to have learning delays and would be enrolled in a school for special education.

Help Needed – Give Hope

Jugging between two roles – the role of the father and that of mother – at the same time, has not been easy. But Shirley, who was the caregiver to her husband who was ill, told us she now draws strength from her two boys.  Recently, they also celebrated one of the boys’ birthdays and Shirley told us that she hopes that she hopes to fill her children’s childhood with more happy memories henceforth, and that her children would get over the grief of losing their dad over time. Despite being constantly worried about the household finances, the resilient mum still strives to provide her children with a better life.
