Medical Conditions

Living in a one-room rental flat with his flatmate who is hardly home, 69-year-old Mr Tan barely has anyone to talk to when he is feeling bored. Mr Tan suffers from a long list of medical conditions including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure amongst others. He also suffered from a severe stroke in 2015, limiting his hand movements. His left eye is also completely blind due to the severity of cataract.

Give Hope to Mr Tan

For more than four decades, the elderly has been working as a taxi driver to support his family. After he retired many years ago, Mr Tan has been relying on quarterly Silver Support scheme ($750 for 3 months) for his living expenses. His application for financial assistance of $200 was recently approved and will last till July 2019. However, the amount of financial assistance that the elderly is receiving is insufficient for his daily living expenses, as well as to pay for his rent, utilities, food and transport.

With his various medical conditions, Mr Tan is unfit for work. This worsens his financial situation, especially when he has no family members to rely on in such difficult times. The elderly, who has lost contact with his three children following his divorce, no longer harbour the thought of reuniting with them now, especially with their estranged relationship. Now, Mr Tan no longer wishes to go for his medical appointments as he is unable to afford to pay for his basic living expenses.

Quoting Mr Tan, “Whether I go for my medical appointments no longer make a difference to me. Because I am still sick and I can no longer get better….”

Financial Breakdown

ROHI would like to raise $1,250 ($250 x 5 months) for the elderly’s living expenses so that he can go for his medical appointments to ensure that his medical conditions do not deteriorate further.

*Mr Tan is currently not receiving public assistance from the Social Service Office (SSO).
