Cooking Up A Storm

In 2019, Glyph launched its inaugural Glyph Culinary Bootcamp, providing kids and teens with an affordable, quality curriculum to pick up basic kitchen skills and to cultivate independence. It was a huge hit amongst the families, since culinary classes are typically a lot more expensive and less accessible to them.

Under the guidance of experienced professional chefs, the Glyph Culinary Bootcamp Programme allows children to explore a range of flavours and textures while being equipped with kitchen basics such as food hygiene, ingredient preparation, kitchen safety, cooking techniques and food presentation. Furthermore, the programme …

What will the funds raised be used for?

Funds raised from this campaign are for children from underprivileged backgrounds (verified by Glyph), to enable them to attend the culinary programme. This would cover programme management costs and culinary school fees.

What does the culinary school fee entail?

These are the fees paid out to the culinary school for providing the venue, food ingredients, as well as chefs and kitchen assistants to teach and facilitate the class.

What does the programme management cost entail?

As a Social Enterprise, Glyph aims to provide affordable premium holistic education for children who would be unable to afford such classes otherwise. In order to do so, we also need to ensure that our operations can be sustained.

For the Culinary Bootcamp, our programme manager is in charge of:

  1. Marketing the programme to the kids and their parents
  2. Liaise with the culinary school to design the curriculum and plan the classes according to the objectives of the programme
  3. Facilitate the classes to ensure each session runs smoothly
  4. Measures the outcomes of the programme to evaluate whether the programme objectives have been met

What do the kids learn in the programme?

In each session, kids are split into groups, and each group will be stationed at one of the workstations, and learn the required skills for that station. Every session, the groups will rotate to different workstations (for example, meat, vegetables, carbohydrates, and dessert/fruits) to learn the different skills associated with each dish.

In the final session, groups will need to prepare bento sets involving all workstations in a friendly competition, to see how much they have learnt over the course of the programme. The main focus of the programme are:

Culinary Abilities:

  1. Hygiene and sanitation
  2. Workplace safety
  3. Mise-en-place (preparation of ingredients)
  4. Cooking techniques
  5. Packing and portioning
  6. Presentation
  7. Time management

Socio-emotional Abilities:

  1. Teamwork/Collaboration: ability to communicate within a group and help one another
  2. Independence/Self-reliance: ability to self-manage
  3. Perseverance: ability to overcome difficulties/setbacks
