Mdm Suria lives with her husband and two sons in a 2-room rental flat. The 44 year-old works as a part-time, administrative staff at a maid agency, while her husband works as food delivery rider. Their children are 10 and 8.
Mdm Suria has been under great stress arising from her caregiving duties and the family’s financial worries. In March 2022, she was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) after suffering from frequent episodes of heart palpitations.
During her medical review in June, Mdm Suria was informed that the doctors would need to monitor her heart to track her progress. However, the device will only be available in September. In the meantime, Mdm Suria has been advised to continue with her medication until her next review in September.
Mdm Suria is not eligible for medical subsidies, because she is on a Long Term Visit Pass (LTVP). In the event that the Cardiac Electrophysiology Study (EPS) procedure is needed, she will be required to pay between $17,000 to $18,000.
Mdm Suria often suffers from headaches, constant fatigue, giddiness and breaks into cold sweat, possibly side effects from her medications. Caring for the children when is especially demanding. Their 10 year-old son has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual disability and speech delay. He attends a special needs school and Mdm Suria is his main caregiver when he returns home.
With a combined income of approximately $3,800 a month, Mdm Suria and her husband struggle financially to cover their family’s needs. Over the years, the family has also incurred debts for their living arrears.
