Ray of Hope is raising $3,870 ($645 x 6 months) to defray Mr Bahkit’s expenses for groceries and Adwa’s milk and diapers. As Adwa suffers from a condition with little chance of improvement, your donation will go a long way by supporting his family as they care for him for life.
Mr Bahkit lives with his wife and three children, aged 25, 7 and 2. His eldest son, from his previous marriage, is enrolled in a tertiary institution. Mr Bahkit has been supporting him since his late wife passed away in 2010.
Mr Bahkit, 56, was the sole breadwinner, earning about $2,000 a month as a Grab driver. In February 2022, 7 year-old Adwa was diagnosed with X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy and Hydrocephalus secondary to Cavum Vargae cyst. Initially, he was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant on 27 June 2022. Unfortunately, the procedure was held off, because his disease had progressed.
Adwa is mostly non-communicative and relies entirely on his parents to care for him. As a result, Mr Bahkit stopped working, because Adwa, needed both parents’ support. In recent months, Adwa’s condition has worsened and he has been hospitalised.
With a toddler to look after, things have been challenging for Mr Bahkit and his wife. They are hoping to enroll their youngest child in infant care next year, while they sort out the caregiving arrangements.
Caring for a child with special needs is not easy and the family is struggling to get by. Mr Bahkit worries about not being able to provide for Adwa, who is on a milk diet and uses diapers.

*Mr Bahkit will be applying for social assistance.
