A resilient single mum struggles to raise her children 

Lis, 47 years old, has come a long way out of an abusive relationship to support her two children by herself. The resilient mum suffered emotional abuse by her ex-husband, told us that her children would always be her priority in life, although they might have long outgrown her laps. The boys, 21 and 17, have seen the darkest moments in their mum’s unhappy marriage and have been her strongest pillar of support through the years.

Help Needed – Give Hope

Even with her limited finances after losing her sales job, Lis is determined to raise her children up well single-handedly. Her eldest son is in the second year of his Polytechnic course. The 21-year-old strives to do well and has proven himself, having received various bursary awards throughout his course of study. His younger brother, now 17, is currently in the first year of his Mechanical Engineering course in ITE. The 21-year-old will be enlisting into National Service after completing his course.

Apart from supporting her children, Lis is also supporting her 65 year old mum financially. With the loss of her employment, Lis told us how hard it is to continue paying for all the expenses, including the mortgage of her 5-room flat that she has been trying to sell over the years. Lis told us that she has also lost her room rental income when she was defaulted more than $2,000 in rent by a friend whom she rented the room to out of goodwill. Lis’ ex-husband is also not paying maintenance for the children, on the condition of allowing the family to continue staying in their current flat, which he has paid a large sum through his CPF account.

Quoting Lis, “Without a job, I can’t downgrade my flat. I am racing against time to look for a job so that my children don’t suffer in debts.” 

Financial Breakdown

Ray of Hope hopes to raise $2,400 ($400 x 6 months) to help defray her family’s groceries expenses while Lis works towards seeking employment. Please donate to help the single mum tide over this period while she tries to straighten out her financial situation.
