41 year-old Mr Aw is the sole breadwinner of his family of 4. He and his wife have two children aged 6 and 4. In 2019, the family was confronted with an unforeseen event. His wife was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease.
Since August 2020, his wife has been undergoing private dialysis three times a week. With sessions costing $200 each time, the family incurs approximately $2,782 every month. Mr Aw works as an F&B Training Manager at a hotel and earns approximately $2400 a month. With dialysis fees to pay for and mouths to feed, Mr Aw and his family have been forced to live beyond their means. To this date, they have incurred $16,849.57 worth of dialysis arrears.
Despite her medical condition, Mr Aw’s wife soldiers on and has taken on a part-time position at an F&B establishment in order to ease financial pressures. Due to the immense financial stress, Mr Aw’s wife also suffers hypertension.
The piling and enormous debt has taken a huge toll on the family, as they continuously navigate through the challenges in their lives.
