Since then, the 67 year-old has been trying to seek employment, in hope of being financially independent. Unfortunately, things have not been smooth-sailing for Mdm Jaya.
She also told us that funds raised previously have helped her tremendously while she was seeking employment. However, her strained relationships with her four children have caused her to be under a lot of emotional and mental stress.
“I’m struggling and crying a lot everyday. I’m only hanging on for my grandson who needs me.” Mdm Jaya shared with the caseworkers.
Mdm Jaya’s ex-husband who has been in and out of prison has not provided any form of emotional or maintenance to her for their four children. She is also the main caregiver for her year-old grandson while her eldest son is at work.
Relying on minimal assistance from the Social Service Office (SSO) and a monthly contribution of $500 from her eldest son, Mdm Jaya has been struggling with the household arrears. This includes HDB, utilities and town council arrears accumulated over the years, amounting to almost $32,000.
*Mdm Jaya is receiving social assistance.
