36-year-old Mdm Su is a mother to three aged 5, 4 and 1. Her 4-year-old daughter suffers from Thalassemia, a blood disorder that causes her body to have less hemoglobin than normal. Thalassemia can cause anemia, leaving you fatigued. Her youngest child was diagnosed with a heart defect at birth and went through surgery a few months ago. Due to her children’s health conditions, their low immune system makes them at higher risk of experiencing frequent infections and severe symptoms. Mdm Su shared that there were multiple times where her children had to be hospitalised.
With the frequent visits to the hospital, Mdm Su’s husband had his work contract terminated by his employer as he was not able to commit to the working hours and had to take multiple leaves.
Ray of Hope would like to raise $2,750 for Mdm Su and her family. This will help them with their food and children’s expenses for the next 5 months ($550 x 5 months).
Mdm Su is the main caregiver of her three children. Her husband was the sole breadwinner supporting the family with his income as a delivery driver. As a delivery driver, he was bringing home close to $1,200. Unfortunately, her husband’s contract was terminated in 2020 as he was unable to commit to the long working hours. Their two youngest daughters were admitted to the hospital frequently due to their condition and low immune system. Over the next few months, the couple took up odd jobs such as a packer to supplement the family’s household income but had to stop working when their daughter had to go through surgery.
With the sudden loss of income, Mdm Su’s family has been relying on assistance from the Social Service Office (SSO) that ends this month. Her husband has enrolled himself for a taxi license next month and wishes to be a taxi driver as the flexibility of the job would allow him to work and care for the children.
With the rise in covid-19 cases in schools, Mdm Su’s children are often at home. The day-to-day strain of providing care to her children has led to exhaustion and fatigue. This has taken a toll on Mdm Su’s physical and mental health. However, the devoted mother would always prioritise her children’s well-being over hers.
