Mr Qiu Zhaochun came to Singapore in 2008 with hopes of providing a better life for his family back in China. For the past 14 years, he has been working to support his elderly parents, wife and two children now aged 22 and 25.
Mr Qiu earned between $4,000 to $5,000 a month in the construction sector. He remitted the bulk of his earnings to his family. Mr Qiu’s parents were farmers, but have stopped work due to their ailing health. His father suffers from stomach cancer and high blood pressure, and his mother has frozen shoulders, arthritis, anaemia and severe insomnia.
In October 2021, Mr Qiu was diagnosed with Covid-19. According to Chinese regulations, he was not allowed to return for 104 days. Things took a drastic turn for the worse when Mr Qiu was diagnosed with Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma (Type 3A), a cancer in the bile ducts that lead out of the liver (hepatic ducts) and join with the gallbladder. Due to the sudden deterioration of his health condition, Mr Qiu had to undergo emergency surgery in December 2021. His medical bills are estimated to be around S$60,000.
