Upon suggestion from closed friend to seek help from social workers in TTSH, Susanne approached a social worker in June and asked for help in appealing to reduce the amount, explaining her current situation and also informing them of the crowd funding from Ray Of Hope. Even with the funds raised, she would not be able to settle the big amount. TTSH has recently granted the approval and the bill has been greatly reduced to $16,558.15.

*2nd UPDATE* It is with great sadness that we inform you of Suma’s passing on the 2nd of May.
A successful tracheostomy was done on the 28 April allowing Suma to breathe on her own. On the 30th of April, the hospital in Semarang had accepted to receive Suma back home. She sent home on the 1st of May and sadly on the 2nd she had passed.
As this was happening, Susanne, Suma’s employer had also lost her job. She received one day’s notice on 30th April 2020 due to Ministry of Health restriction on clinic staff ratio during the coronavirus circuit breaker. She now has a bill of over $100,000 at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, well as the Air Ambulance cost of $28,400 to pay. Susanne and her sister have been supporting Suma while taking care of their elderly parents. Insurance for Suma is capped at $30,000 and it will take some time to process. Susanne will update us when she hears back from the insurance company.
Ray of Hope has thus increased the fundraising target to $145,370 which will include the following:
- $113,190 for the hospital bill
- $28,400 to help with the air ambulance cost
- $3780 ($630 x 6months) to support Suma’s family with the income loss for 6 months.

*1st UPDATE* Suma’s condition has worsened and her condition is not stable enough for her to be sent to the hospital at her hometown of Semarang. She has undergone another surgery on her as the tumour has grown bigger and is pressing the nerve connecting to her vital organs. It was a 6 hour surgery and Suma is still in the unresponsive stage. She is still in ICU and her bill continues to rise. The current bill stands at just over $80,000 with $68,621.95 outstanding. Her employer, Susanne, continues to visit her and prays for her condition to improve. Suma may need to undergo another 2 procedures before she is able to be transported via air ambulance.
Ray of Hope has thus increased the fundraising target to $82,402 which will include the following:
- $68,622 for the hospital bill
- $10,000 to help with the air ambulance cost
- $3780 ($630 x 6months) to support Suma’s family with the income loss for 6 months.

Suma is a Foreign Domestic Worker who had been working for her current employer for the last 3 and a half years. She was helping her employer take care of her elderly mother who is suffering from dementia. She is a fun and bubbly individual who has is suddenly suffering a tragic illness.
One night, she started having double vision, was weak and losing her balance. The GP had diagnosed her with hypertension and provided her with vitamins. However, she was subsequently unable to walk and displayed the symptoms of a stroke, with her BP remaining normal. She was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital on the 20th of March and the doctors confirmed she had a tumor in her brain. The doctors were unsure of the stage of her tumor and they decided not to do a biopsy as it was too high risk.
Suma has since been admitted to the ICU at TTSH and has spent over 2 weeks in the hospital. Her employer has been visiting her and is hoping her condition stabilises soon so that she an go back home to Semarang to be with her family. He employer has contacted the Air Ambulance company and was quoted US$20,000 for the transfer to Semarang.
Back home, Suma has an elderly mother and a daughter. She was sending money back to them to care for them. She will no longer be able to support them financially as she recovers.

Ray of Hope would like to raise $34,475 to help Suma and her employer. Their current bill at TTSH is $20,694.05. The total will also include 6 months of support for Suma’s family back home. Suma was earning $630 per month here.
